11% of App Problems on Vista…

11% of App Problems on Vista…

“…simply updating the Windows version number from 5.2 to 6.0 is responsible for 11% of all application compatibility failures.”

Bad developers.  Bad, bad, bad.  Go to your rooms and think about what you’ve done.  And no free soft drinks for 3 days.

Giant Yellow Screen of Death

Giant Yellow Screen of Death

You’ve heard the error screen in ASP.NET called the Yellow Screen of Death (alt: the Yellow Screen of Darn)?  I’m glad this one wasn’t one of my apps:

Silverlight Brings .NET Framework to Mac OS X

Silverlight Brings .NET Framework to Mac OS X

One of the big pieces of news from MIX07 is that Silverlight 1.1 will include the .NET Framework and it will run on Mac OS X in Firefox and Safari.  Currently Silverlight also works with IE6, IE7, and Firefox on Windows XP and Vista.  Support for Opera is planned but it seems there are too many issues to make it available for public consumption.

In case you’ve missed the previous announcements, Silverlight is the new name for WPF/e, which is Microsoft’s Flash killer (for lack of a better descriptor).

I think this is huge news and I’m excited to jump into some real Silverlight development.  I’m a lot more excited about Silverlight (formerly WPF/e) now that there is .NET support.  It was interesting before with only Javascript but with JIT-compiled managed code, things will really smoke.

Client-side .NET support is not in the Silverlight 1.0 Beta.  It is in the Silverlight 1.1 Alpha release.  Silverlight 1.1 uses the same core CLR as the desktop .NET Framework but some things have been factored out.  I heard today that COM interop is not included.

New Design and Blogging Platform

New Design and Blogging Platform

Well, if you’ve been wondering what the heck has happened to the Ardent Dev bloggers, we’re back!  Personally I’ve been busy blogging over at derekhat.com and doing some developer podcasts at devcasting.com.  I’ve been planning to move this blog from dasBlog to WordPress so everytime I’ve had something to blog here I’ve felt like I should update the blogging software before writing a post.  The inevitable procrastination ensued each time, but this week I finally got things updated!  The feed has not changed:  http://feeds.feedburner.com/ArdentBlog.
